From the Factory To the Finance Department

About tasha Tolliver

I started out this life in a rough neighborhood with two disabled parents, not enough money to get by, and not much to look forward to. By the grace of God and a lot of hard work, I got into a good university. During my first semester in a sociology class, I read a disturbing statistic: only 4% of the people in the United States that were born into families in the lowest 20% of household income earners ever reach the top 20% of household income earners. In other words: born poor, die poor. I remember thinking to myself 26 years ago: I SWEAR TO GOD THAT WILL NOT BE ME!!

However, I was forced to drop out after that first year. I didn't have enough money to carry on. I got a job at a Fortune 100 company, working in a factory on a production line because I knew they would pay for my degree. Over the years, I got my degree, landed an entry level job in accounting, and continued earning promotions in accounting and finance from there. Ten years ago, I landed my dream job supporting the executives of my company in everything related to managing their company budgets. I learned so much being in the presence of Corporate America's leaders, and my career had been really rewarding...until the pandemic struck.

During the pandemic, I got so disillusioned with the news of the high unemployment. It scared me--I was one pink slip away from losing everything. I decided to open a dog daycare and grooming facility to help secure my family's financial freedom. It was only then that I understood the issues that challenged small business owners, and many have no finance background. My experience supporting executives taught me how to break down financial concepts and explain them in layman's terms for really smart people that just didn't have a knack of finance. Most small business owners start companies because they want to provide their product or service to the masses. When they figure out how to catch lighting in a bottle and the money starts rolling in, it can be too much too fast for those that don't understand the fundamentals of finance. It is my mission to combine my experience as an entrepreneur with my experience supporting company leaders with their budgets, and make sure this service available and within reach to every small business owner that needs it.
